Description
52 Hertz
Oil painting
February 2014
Here is a story of loneliness to last for the ages. A story of hopelessness and hopefulness – told in song – from a solitary creature of the sea that has managed to reach a young man landlocked in the midwest. The 52 Hertz whale sings a song for no one, as the frequency that he sings is higher than that of his own kind, and they cannot hear it. This forces a loneliness upon him as vast as the ocean itself, and his cry for love and companionship echoes on through ocean walls with no response.
Since his initial discovery in 1989, a group of scientists have been tracking with him, peering into his life, and listening in. And he’s still singing. And he’s still on his own. Whether we’ve tapped into it or not, we all have a longing to be seen, to be heard, and to be known, and many of us have gone through our own lives feeling unheard. Whether it’s the cards we are dealt, or our own self preservation, loneliness threads across humanity composing one epic ballad. We all have our “own song”, that in the end, can only fully be heard by God. He lends the ear of heaven towards us, peering into our lives, listening in.
All the more, let us sing.
